Position Overview

We are looking for a motivated and curious Co-Op Student Developer to join our software development team for a 12-month placement. In this role, you will gain hands-on experience in AI, machine learning, and software engineering, while contributing directly to research-driven projects and production-grade solutions. This position provides an opportunity to learn from experienced engineers, collaborate across disciplines, and make meaningful contributions to innovative software initiatives.

  • This is a paid co-op position with an annual salary.
  • Depending on the collaboration and approval of your university, this placement may also be eligible for university credit.

Work Location

This is a hybrid role based at our Toronto office. Students will be required to work in-office on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.


Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct literature reviews on modern algorithms, advanced deep learning, and causal inference methods.
  • Learn and apply AI frameworks, libraries, and tools to support ongoing projects.
  • Contribute to the design, implementation, testing, and documentation of software modules.
  • Develop and debug code using the test-driven development (TDD) methodology, with guidance from senior engineers.
  • Participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and agile ceremonies to ensure quality of delivery.
  • Collaborate with product managers, engineers, and data scientists on cross-functional initiatives.
  • Build and iterate on rapid proof-of-concept prototypes to validate new ideas and technical feasibility.
  • Document research findings, design choices, and technical learnings.
  • Contribute creative ideas to enhance products and development processes.

Requirements
  • Enrolled in a 3rd or 4th year undergraduate program in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or a related discipline.
  • Strong academic standing; coursework in linear algebra, probability, algorithms, and deep learning with a grade of B+ or higher preferred.
  • Ability to commit to a 12-month, full-time placement, including at least three in-office days per week.
  • Demonstrated interest in deep learning, quantitative methods, software engineering, and AI applications.
  • Proficiency in Python and familiarity with testing frameworks (e.g., pytest, unittest).
  • Knowledge of object-oriented design and software engineering best practices.
  • Familiarity with lean product design and agile methodologies.
  • Ability to work independently on technical tasks while collaborating effectively in a team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for documentation and technical discussions.
  • Adaptability and enthusiasm for working in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have)
  • Experience with AI frameworks (PyTorch, DoWhy, EconML) and cloud technologies.
  • Familiarity with Bayesian causal networks, probabilistic graphical models, causal discovery and inference methods.
  • Familiarity with scalable, high-performance software design.
  • Experience with data pipelines, APIs, or third-party integrations.
  • Prior student projects, internships, or research demonstrating ability to deliver high-quality results on time.
